- McDonald’s recent NFT launch underscores increasing corporate interest in crypto.
McDonald’s Singapore has revealed plans to launch 2,000 Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) in the forthcoming week. This venture into the digital asset space is a joint effort between McDonald’s, Bandwagon Labs – a prominent metaverse service provider, and The Hidden Walls, a renowned NFT artist.
The Grimace Digital Collectibles platform allows users to possess a digital avatar of Grimace, a Ronald McDonald universe character first unveiled over half a century ago. According to the official announcement, the collection will be accessible at no cost, with the sole prerequisite being ownership of a Digital Collectibles wallet. This wallet can be obtained via the MetaMask application and Web3Auth. Each wallet can mint a single NFT, which is non-transferable and cannot be put up for sale.
McDonald’s asserts that each of the 2000 digital tokens will represent Grimace’s characteristics and spirit. Drina Chee, the Senior Director of McDonald’s, remarked, “Each token is a unique digital asset, a non-fungible token (NFT), that captures the unique attributes and essence of Grimace.”
Grimace holds a special place in the hearts of many of our superfans, and this initiative allows us to evolve the character from nostalgic memories to love for all generations.
The quick-service restaurant behemoth has been assertively marking its territory in the digital realm. Just recently, in June, McDonald’s unveiled McNuggets Land within the metaverse ecosystem of The Sandbox as a commemorative gesture for the 40th anniversary of Chicken McNuggets. Looking ahead to 2022, the corporation has also hinted at its ambition to broaden its reach into the “virtual food and beverage industry”, by establishing outlets within the Metaverse.
The recent addition of McDonald’s Grimace Digital Collectibles to the growing list of corporate NFT drops further underscores the increasing corporate interest in crypto. This follows hot on the heels of Coca-Cola’s inaugural NFT collection and Reddit’s release of its fourth-generation NFT collectibles, marking a significant trend in the industry.
