Report: Remitano Crypto Exchange Exploited for $2.7 Million
  • Cryptocurrency platform Remitano experienced a security breach involving $2.7 million.
  • Tether intervened, immobilizing $1.4 million in response to the breach.
  • The Lazarus Group is suspected of hacking cryptocurrency exchange CoinEx.

Yesterday, the cryptocurrency platform Remitano experienced a security compromise. Unusual transactions involving removing more than $2.7 million in digital currency were detected. In response to the disorder, Tether swiftly intervened, immobilizing $1.4 million.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., a notification was triggered when a confirmed Remitano hot wallet started transferring funds to an unidentified address. The suspicious transactions involved $1.4 million in Tether , $208,000 in USDC, and Ankr tokens valued at 2,000 USD. This immediately elicited a cautionary alert from Cyvers, a blockchain analysis platform, to the cryptocurrency industry.

Remitano has yet to issue an official statement regarding the security breach. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first instance of such a hack in 2023. Previous security breaches at other cryptocurrency exchanges have exposed private keys, leading to significant losses.

The Lazarus Group has been implicated in numerous significant offenses this year, such as the attack on the Stake platform, which allegedly yielded more than $200 million. Their activities have not been limited to financial companies but have also targeted governmental entities.

Additionally, the FBI has requested that cryptocurrency enterprises maintain heightened vigilance and refrain from engaging in transactions with addresses associated with the criminal group.

Blockchain security firm SlowMist and on-chain analyst ZachXBT have reported that the notorious hacking group Lazarus perpetrated the recent attack on cryptocurrency exchange CoinEx, resulting in a loss of at least $55 million. The group inadvertently exposed its address, which was utilized in the earlier Stake and Optimism security breaches, thereby allowing for its identification.
