The 'Buy Bitcoin' Notepad Fetches $1.02 Million Sale
  • “Buy Bitcoin” sign from Yellen’s testimony sold for over $1 million.
  • Christian Langalis’s 2017 spontaneous act becomes iconic in crypto community.
  • Sign auctioned for 16 BTC, symbolizing Bitcoin’s financial scene impact.

The person who unexpectedly appeared in the background of ex-Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s photo with a sign urging the purchase of Bitcoin successfully sold that same sign for a sum exceeding $1 million.

The “Buy Bitcoin” message, written on a yellow notepad, was unexpectedly shown by Christian Langalis, who was 22 at the time, during Yellen’s live broadcast of her congressional testimony in 2017. Unbeknownst to Langalis at the time, his spontaneous gesture would go on to become an iconic emblem within the cryptocurrency community. This famous sign was put up for sale on the Scarce City platform just last week.

The final sale event occurred at the Pubkey Bar in New York City on Wednesday, April 24. The well-known “Buy Bitcoin” sign was on display for the public to see at Pubkey throughout the auction period.

Langalis himself was present at the auction’s conclusion. After a week of bidding, the renowned sign was purchased by the top bidder, who goes by the pseudonym “Squirrekkywrath”, for 16 BTC, which was equivalent to $1,023,915.52 at the time.

The second-highest offer was 15.5 BTC from a bidder named NoCBs. The auction site described the yellow legal pad as a significant marker of Bitcoin’s emergence in the international financial scene. It also mentioned that the “Buy Bitcoin” sign is one of the rare tangible artifacts associated with Bitcoin, considering the cryptocurrency’s digital nature.

Christian Langalis, who was interning at the Cato Institute, gained media attention in July 2017 when he confidently displayed the “Buy Bitcoin” sign behind Janet Yellen as she was presenting the Federal Reserve’s semi-annual report on monetary policy to Congress.

Despite being removed from the hearing room due to his behavior, Langalis’s actions had an instant effect. CNBC coverage indicated that during the live transmission, Bitcoin’s value increased by 3.7%.

Following that event, Bitcoin has consistently experienced significant increases in its value. It has risen by 2,631% from approximately $2,700 in July 2017 to its highest point of $73,750 in March 2024.
