Ethereum's Protocol: Should it Evolve with More Features?
  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin discussed potential broader functionality for Ethereum’s protocol.
  • Buterin highlighted the community’s interest in integrating more functionalities directly.
  • Developer Robert Sasu questioned maintaining minimalism amidst evolving technological needs.

During a presentation, Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, explored a critical issue confronting the Ethereum community. The issue pertains to Ethereum’s potential adoption of a broader incorporation of functionalities into its primary protocol.

Buterin emphasized that Ethereum has consistently followed a principle of simplicity, aiming to maintain the fundamental Ethereum protocol as streamlined as possible. The focus has been on developing crucial features as distinct protocols layered above the core protocol.

Conversely, he noted that discussions within the community regarding the preference for Layer 1 (L1) or Layer 2 (L2) solutions are often linked to scaling problems. However, Buterin highlighted that these considerations also apply to meeting the diverse requirements of Ethereum users. He asserted that this includes elements like digital asset trading, privacy, usernames, advanced cryptography, account security, resistance to censorship, and protection against frontrunning.

Additionally, he highlighted an increasing curiosity within the Ethereum community about potentially integrating more of these functionalities directly into the fundamental Ethereum protocol. Buterin’s presentation was designed to clarify the philosophical foundations of Ethereum’s initial simplistic approach while examining changing viewpoints on these concepts. The primary goal is to establish a basis for pinpointing potential sectors where incorporating certain features into the protocol might require significant deliberation.

Robert Sasu, a key developer at MultiversX, has shared his views on the current discussion surrounding Ethereum’s protocol minimalism. He has put forth an argument that questions the idea of maintaining minimalism amidst the changing needs of technology.

Sasu noted, “The minimalist philosophy doesn’t truly withstand the continuous evolution and requirements of the world.” He praised Ethereum’s accomplishment in launching a Virtual Machine (VM) over the blockchain, facilitating programmability and allowing developers to develop various products and applications.

Nonetheless, Sasu underscored the ever-evolving landscape of the software industry, where innovation is a constant. He pointed out that new benchmarks are continually being set, providing quicker, safer, and more scalable solutions as the user base grows, resulting in a wider range of requirements.

Sasu compared the initial simplistic approach of Ethereum and the experiences of corporations such as Kodak and Nokia. These companies struggled due to their inability to adjust to evolving technological environments.
